School’s out
For six weeks only…
- ‘School’s Out’ £15 lunchtime menu
in Bibendum Restaurant - Afternoon tea in the Oyster Bar
- Monsieur Bibendum drawing competition,
to be judged by Sir Terence Conran
Six weeks of school summer holidays is a mixed blessing; mothers
(mostly),
and fathers (some) across the country look forward to
this annual milestone with a combination of excitement and trepidation.
Although liberated from the relentless routine that school life is to parents, the long holiday presents a whole new set of challenges. Not least of these is finding a way to balance entertainment to suit all ages. With stay-at-home holidays predicted to be all the rage in summer 2009, parents will be searching for ways to provide affordable treats close to home.
Inevitably, at some stage of July or August, a trip to the centre of London to take advantage of child-friendly museums and exhibitions, will start sounding like an inspired idea. Which of course it is. But a day spent dutifully entertaining assorted offspring is not entirely stress-free and requires punctuations of calm and nourishment. The proximity of the Michelin Building to all the museums makes it the perfect place to head for lunch or afternoon tea.
In addition to the normal set menu, and lunch time a la carte menu, Bibendum is offering a special ‘school’s out’ lunch time menu in the first floor restaurant.* The simple set menu will feature Fish and Chips and Ice cream, and will be priced at £15·00 for two courses, or £17·50 for three. It will be available to both kids and adults.
The cool exterior of the Oyster Bar on the ground floor will provide a refuge during the afternoons. From 3:30 to 5:30pm, parents and children alike can enjoy a sustaining afternoon tea with bridge rolls, homemade scone, jam and clotted cream, and tea/coffee/soft drink for £8·50 per head. Weary parents can of course also head for the wine list!
Bibendum offers parents an opportunity to rest their weary feet in a beautifully grown up dining room. A sensibly priced child-friendly menu (minus the E numbers) will provide the perfect distraction to allow mum and dad time to sip a glass of wine
and enjoy an adult lunch. There is no reason why a day out in central London shouldn’t be enjoyed by the whole family.![]()
Monsieur Bibendum drawing competition:

Sitting still for longer than it takes to eat fish and chips, and ice cream, can be challenging for the under 12s, so to maximise parental lunch time peace, Bibendum will be providing children with paper, pens and pencils and encouraging them to enter the Monsieur Bibendum drawing competition. The rules simply require customers in the restaurant to create a piece of art using the iconic Monsieur Bibendum as their inspiration. Entrants must be under 12, and the work must be completed on the premises, during the ‘School’s Out’ promotion. There’s plenty of material in the room to provide inspiration, and at the end of the school holidays, Sir Terence Conran will be selecting a winner and the winning young artist will be presented with a certificate and a prize.
*Available Monday to Friday only, 27th July to 4th September.
